Where I'm sitting, `dig mx roderik.nl` doesn't produce any answers. In
other words, my DNS server doesn't have any MX records for that domain.

What do you get from the `dig mx exim.org` command? If there's no
ANSWER stanza, you have a DNS problem.

That means Exim could deliver neither the original message nor the
resulting bounce message.
