Tárgy: [exim] help in choosing LMTP method ... info overload
hi all,

(i'm sure all these Q's have been asked b4 ... any pointers to where they've been answered
well/summarily would be appreciated.)

after a 'run' with dovecot, i'm moving a server to cyrus imap ...

i'm configuring for local delivery via cyrus' lmtp.

exim, of course (since 4.1.2?) can communicate/callout to cyrus via either TCP or UNIX sockets,
using smtp or lmtp transport.

iiuc, my relevant options for local delivery are, from the spec:

(1) LMTP over TCP/IP (the smtp transport with the protocol option set to ?lmtp?);
(2) LMTP over a pipe to a process running in the local host (the lmtp transport);

there's *loads* of googl'able discourse on the two options, and good docs on HOW to implement
either in the spec, etc.

i'm still unclear, tho, as to the driving rationale (performance? security? politics?) one
chooses one over the other ...

from this message:

    <http://www.exim.org/mail-archives/exim-users/Week-of-Mon-20021223/msg00065.html>

    "The CMU folks recommend using LMTP over TCP or unix sockets - no matter what MTA you use - on
general principle, mostly for perfomance reasons"

is this still valid? recommended? w/ "today's" Exim?

it seems that tho (2) is (was?) recommended, SMTP transport has many more options ... is this
added flexibility, or just unncessary noise?

jada jada jada ...

cheers,

richard
