[exim] linker error with exim 4.54/solaris 9/gcc 2.95.2

I get the following on the final link stage...

gcc -o exim
collect2: ld terminated with signal 11 [Segmentation Fault]
ld: fatal: file *** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `exim'

building exim 4.54 whereas 4.52 built without any problems on the same
machine. I realise that the gcc is a bit old but have never had any
problems before.
