hi marc,

thx 4 the reply =) and the pointer ...

1st, i'm just using MY experience with this var as an example ...

2nd, i'm most certainly NOT going to argue that the info isn't there ...
somewhere.

in fact, per my last msg, i ACK that:

sure it's 'obvious' (no, not poking any badgers ...), and has been
discussed b4, but so has just abt everything ELSE in exim. hence the
        1/2 million (or so ;-) ) pages of docs/books/wikis/mails/lists/etc/etc.
if it were there, i would've saved myself a fair amt of time.

i'm simply suggesting -- using my own experience -- that perhaps a
different/additional form of synopsis would be useful/valuable.

much info is already tabulated in convenient form ... why not this? posing
possible answers to my own/this question:

(1) it's too complicated / too hard / impossible / ...
(2) my problems are simply evidence that i am UNIQUELY incompetent, and it's
easy/obvious to everyone else ...

de nada. found it.

also, read it. again. and, even _knowing_ the answer now, it, imho, does not
'clearly leap off the page' ...

this all simply begs the question, for WHOM are docs (to be) written?

i have printed and electronic copies of everything i can find. i actually _do_
read thru them. i've highlighted the book & spec so much they look like
they've been dipped in saffron.

at the end of the day, a slightly-more-than-newbie-and-far-from-expert user
couldn't find the 'obvious/apparent' enaswer that was 'in there'.

this too, would help! =)

thx,
