I had use it on a single machine where aren't lot of mailboxes, but it
was a newsletter mail sender, and the bounce messages were to much.
(about 10-20.000 mails / day). I'd use it, because other pop3 szervers
are timed out when we tried to download that messages. It worked well
with exim, but it wasn't to clever pop3 server. Maybe try to use cyrus,
it's feautre rich, and so stable.
