What's in your /etc/hosts file?
There should be an entry for localhost:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
Is the resolver looking in /etc/hosts? Does /etc/nsswitch.conf (is this the
same in Debian, I'd expect so) contain an entry for hosts which says it can
look in files:
hosts: files dns
