I don't know The Bat either, but I know that in Thunderbird, the options
for encryption are:
* none
* TLS (if available)
* TLS
* SSL

The "TLS" options are standard STARTTLS on an initially unencrypted
port. The "SSL" option is tls-on-connect. If The Bat is the same, (and
it would explain the line in question, because it means that your client
is trying to send a plain text EHLO and STARTTLS to a tls-on-connect
port), then you should actually try following Jakob's advice instead of
rejecting it out of hand.

Also, please try not to use excessive abbreviation. I had a lot of
trouble parsing your message. In particular, your original message had
me stumped for a long time about how Samba fit into this problem, before
I realized that "smbd" actually meant "somebody".
