[exim] which approach for: exiscan, clamav & spamassassin ?

hi all,

i'm moving to use of exiscan for spamassassin & clamav integration ...

i also understand that spamassassin ALSO provides an access/use method for
clamav -- a plugin:

    <http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/ClamAVPlugin>

so my question is:

what are the issues/considerations choosing between:


(1) exiscan using spamassassin & clamav each directly ...

                   |---- spamassassin
        exiscan ---|
                   |---- clamav

and

(2) exiscan using spamassassin directly, with spamassassin using clamav
indirectly

        exiscan ----|---- spamassassin ----|---- clamav

the comments/thread on the SA site are rather dated, and i'm just wondering how
use/opinions have evolved ...
