[exim] Redundant connections from remote hosts

Since using the rate limiting feature, I've noticed that some hosts -
generally ones running mailing list software - make two connections
simultaneously on different ports and then send their message through one of
them.

Does anyone have any insight into why they're doing this? What's the point
in using up two connections?
