Thanks John, I'll look into changing the apache user from nobody to
something else or patching exim, but there's an important detail I forgot to
mention earlier: I am able to use the mail function in php successfully to
send email, it's just when I use the application in php (which is encoded by
the developers so I can't see what they're doing) that an error occurs.

Does the php mail function send email differently? Maybe this is not the
right place for such a question :)

the negative UID is causing this. See change PH/34 in release 4.51
