I'd guess that they just are not familiar with the technical basics of
their business, not knowing which characters are allowed in an e-mail
addresses' local part.

There is unbearable stupidity out there.

Unfortunately, the Spammers are getting smarter, and the numbers of
spam successfully sent to mh+some-suffix@??? are rapidly
approaching the numbers of spam bouncing off some-suffix@???.

Developers of commercially-used web apps don't seem to get any
smarter, though.
