Mirrors are important in countries where International access is slow
and (probably more importantly) expensive. Though of course suitable web
caches at the International connection points can help, they are not
always available. I think what I am saying is that mirrors are still
important in the less-developed parts of the world for the same reasons
that they were once important everywhere. No doubt this implies that in
due course we can hope that their importance will reduce as the
less-developed parts of the world catch up. But I do not think this will
happen overnight, despite the grand words of our politicians.
