Not a pointer, but if I have
"root: swayne@???" in my /etc/aliases file and run:

echo Test email|mail root -s "Test email"

it goes to swayne@???

And I'm using Debian with Exim4.

Have you changed the /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template file at all?
