However, there can be a large difference between the release time of a new
Cisco IOS and adoption by those sites not under a support contract. (Even
under contract, which takes care of the $$$--or whatever currency, IOS
updates on single-point-of-failure boxes are scary.)

I think we'll still be talking about PIX for a long time...changing what we
say to something like "PIX with old IOS software and SMTP fix up".
