One would have to look at the history of the development of the maildir
system. Planting the message into tmp makes sense...while there, the
message isn't ready to be read. (And that's why we can't plant directly
into cur.)

I have read the reasons for the new step, but I don't recall what they were.

But, for POP at least, watch out for MUAs which ignore what the server tells
them--or can be configured to--and keep track for themselves.

In other words, even if we mark correctly, fewer than all users may notice.
