apart that I am too running exim on a G4/400 (and "only" 512MB RAM,
exim + clamav), and that was before a G3/233 (and 160MB but that
without clamav) and never had problems, what do you mean by "killing
the box"?? Have you checked what, and if anything, is taking up
resources?
