It retries 10 times at 30-second intervals. Clearly it would not be
difficult to make those numbers configurable.

It would be *much* less work just to tweak the numbers 10 and 30.
Anything more would certainly be (IMHO) overkill for this rather special
requirement.

In the meantime, you can trivially patch 10 and 30 in the daemon.c
source if you are desperate for a solution. Look at lines 1252 and 1336.
