Thanks for pointing that out.
As it happens, those who earlier mentioned that I check with my ISP were
correct; they block port 25 by default for customers, but will unblock it
and reverse DNS if you ask nicely, so the "relay not permitted" issue when
using a smarthost isn't a problem for me any more as I can set up my server
to send mail directly.
However, for the record, here are the relevant logs, in case someone has an
answer to help someone else who wants/needs to use a smarthost with exim and
mailman.
So, with exim set up to use a smarthost to send mail, this is what happens
when a post is sent from an external email (bestb@???) to a mailman
mailing list (croissues@???) hosted on my machine 216.138.221.201
