Old software is not a problem. Old protocols are designed to be
compatible. It only has to conform with them. As I was saying only
the other day, my HTML/2.0 pages can be browsed at least as well today
as they could when they were written in +/- 1994. And SMTP is the
same principle.

If software violates requirements of the published interworking
protocols, then it does not matter in the least whether it is old or
new - it needs to be replaced.
