Ok, can you believe it but I did some work on my own.
I checked the mainlog file and this is what was in there:
2005-02-07 22:58:54 1C8M3r-0000AV-00 Message is frozen
2005-02-07 22:58:54 End queue run: pid=32709
2005-02-07 23:03:51 Failed to create IPv6 socket for wildcard
listening (Address family not supported by protocol): $
2005-02-07 23:03:51 socket bind() to port 25 for address (any IPv4)
failed: Address already in use: waiting before t$
2005-02-07 23:04:21 socket bind() to port 25 for address (any IPv4)
failed: Address already in use: waiting before t$
I ran exim as a daemon instead of in inetd. did that with:
/usr/sbin/exim -bd -q15m
I removed smtp line from inetd.
Added it to /etc/services.
Checked lsof | grep -i tcp, and after restarting inetd, smtp only
showed up once, as exim.
Checked paniclog, was full. Deleted it all, after all the work I did
this is the only warning that arose:
2005-02-07 23:08:21 socket bind() to port 25 for address (any IPv4)
failed: Address already in use: daemon abandoned
Obviously I have a problem with port 25 being assigned to something
else. I removed it everywhere but /etc/services so I dont understand
that.
either way it looks better, aside from those few errors. was getting
many more before.
