SORRY! Thinko Alert! Mea Culpa! Mea Culpa! What I wrote is utter
nonsense. Blame it on Friday.

I take it all back. There is no problem with your spool directories.
(It's the last character of the FIRST component that is used for the
subdirectory, not the last character of the last component.)

So, back to the other idea: what spool directory is Exim looking at? Did
you try running the -Mrm with the -d debugging flag?
