It's amazingly powerful. It allows you to do a number of cool things:
(1) expose the result of routing to the ACLs
(1a) find out which individual user a virtual address belongs to in order
to do per-user filtering rules (e.g. many of our addresses go through
three internal redirects before reaching a real mailbox)
(2) pass data from one router to another so that you can change Exim's
routing algorithm
(2a) turn unseen into unseen_once
(2b) make router preconditions depend on previous routing (e.g. for
cryptographic bounce authentication)
et cetera mutatis mutandis
