Hello, not strictly related to exim, but likely to find some answers here.

I would like to know your suggestion as to a reliable and "simple"
setup for exim + imap (and perhaps pop). I am currently using
exim4.43 + WU-Imap but I would like to convert to maildir format (for
performance and locking issues).

My userbase is quite small, say under 100.

Requirements:

a) to be able to check email locally on the server (for instance from
a cybercafe). At the moment this is achieved having all users local
users and checking with pine.

b) to be able to check email remotely (via IMAP), that is which one
to choose of cyrus, courier and dovecot.

Solutions:

keep users local: pine is fine, any IMAP server that supports PAM is fine.

have a generic user for email: is there command-line client that can
be used locally on the server to check email for a given local_part?
This would be a command line equivalent of webmail.

what authorisation scheme?

I want local mail delivery to be as solid as possible, so I am not
that happy with what I think is the cyrus approach, where mail is
passed vis lmtp (is that a requirement? or may exim save it directly
in its own maildir format?).
I have a test server where I deployed sometime ago exim + dovecot and
this was very straightforward.

Transition: how to convert mailboxes into maildir so that the naming
remains consistent after the transition. I better explain: when I
tested dovecot I used a script to convert mailboxes to maildirs, but
the resulting filenames are very different with the names used by
exim maildir delivery. This seems not very elegant to me...

Ideas?

Thanks
