I do not know and I will do some tests (even if I do not use
Mail.app). I suppose just getting rid of the authenticators should be
fine to test it...
I can say that if delivery fails, Mail.app asks the user if he wants
to use another outgoing smtp server and presents him with a choice.
Clearly if they haven't configured an alternative non authenticated
outgoing smtp this is not going to help..

Done. I can confirm, you must tell them to set an alternative with no
authentication and they will be asked if they want to use it. But I
do not understand why would a server have auth available only for IP
outside a certain range? What's the problem in having authentication
for all clients trying to relay? This, btw, would stop virus from
within using the server.
