Replying to myself here, for the sake of the archives. Amazing the
good a night's sleep will do. Seem to have fixed this by turning my
Maximum packet size (MTU) town to 1492. Looks like my upstream was
doing some mucking with their routers on the weekend.
And, as always, the answer was right there in the faq, staring me in
the eyes all along:

Which I had read yesterday but failed to click as the cause of my problems.
