OK thanks for that all, we got the user to use port 587 and he got the
following error

The connection to the server has failed. Account:
'staff-mailin.lboro.ac.uk', Server: 'staff-mailout.lboro.ac.uk',
Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0E

So I tried doing it locally here on campus and got the same error, the
log entry says

2004-09-21 15:57:12 SMTP protocol violation: synchronization error
(input sent without waiting for greeting): rejected connection from
H=[131.231.83.115]

H=[131.231.83.115]

This is a bog standard OE client on XP set to use smtp authentication
and ssl. It works fine if I use port 25.

Is there something broken with OE that it barfs when you try to use
other ports ?
