I did a test on my 4.10 server, which basically has the exact same
config (local domains and stuff are of course different) using the same
level of debug. A mail from the same client (Mail.app on OS X 10.3.5)
did the EHLO -- STARTTLS -- EHLO. It did not do a HELO like on the
broken server. I also noticed that the amount of debug info in the
"good" server's STARTTLS command was a lot more. Much more SSL stuff.

A test on the broken server with Mulbery shows that it gives the EHLO
and a STARTTLS. Then Mulbery reports back "TCP/IP -- Connection reset
by remote host while sending 'EHLO' command to smtp server."

Given the above "facts", I think the broken server has a broken TLS
cert or maybe it is using a different version of openssl or something.
Something caused by the underlying change from Mandrake to gentoo. The
clients aren't broken -- they do the right things. The Mail.app that
issues the HELO after the STARTTLS I think is falling back to HELO
after the STARTTLS fails to finish.

There are no SSL or TLS errors in the debug log I posted earlier, but
it looks shorter and has less SSL feedback than the one from my 4.10
server when doing the same test from the same client against it.

I will experiment more and report back if I fix it.

In case anyone wants to compare the debug log for when Mulbery hits it
versus the one I posted earlier when Mail.app hits it, here it is: (and
after that is an excerpt from the 4.10 server doing its TSL stuff --
same level of debug, but one is a 4.22 (broken one) and one is 4.10 so
there could be some differences based on that)

broken server (4.22) with Mulbery:
