Perhaps you were pouring the wrong substance over them? Don't use water
-- it just makes them soggy. Try heating oil; that tends not to degrade
the quality of the paper so much.

I assume you were pouring over the printed docs, not pouring over a
computer screen? Don't pour over a computer screen -- that's dangerous.
