[exim] Strange Characters in Greeting

Subject: [exim] Strange Characters in Greeting
This is probably easy - but I'm missing something.

If I telnet into localhost 25 I get the standard exim greeting.
Everything is fine.

But - if I telnet in from outside I get:

220 ***********************************2******200**0*****0***0*00

What am I missing?
