[exim] EHLO/HELO checking problem

How do I ensure that:
a) HELO/EHLO was presented
b) HELO/EHLO was accepted
c) maybe even that (b) happens only once ???

This does not look too good (and some MUAs skip this way):

EHLO %
501 Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s)
MAIL FROM: a@???
250 OK
...
