Thanks everybody for your input. Case closed.
Deleting the Offending user file in /var/mail and
re-making it cured the problem.
My difficulty was knowing where to start and not
knowing how Exim and Imap work together. I was terse
because if it was unlikely that Exim was involved it
would save time.
