Hello Jonathan,

First, are you trying to get your email or send emails ?

Is your problem is getting email this doesn't concern exim.

If you can't send email, I think the easyest thing to do is talk to
your sysadmin. He is the one who set the authentications rules. There
are several ways to do the authentication, (ie: password, hmac, ssl,
nossl). Since you did not provide us enough information on your server
configuration, the best person to help you is your sysadmin.

I'am using Mail.app with exim and it's working like a charm.
