[Exim] NEWBIE - I can't find the answer

Sorry people, I am sure this gets asked hundreds of times.

Simply, I want to enable SMTP authentication and have the password used be
stored in the /etc/passwd file. I think this is done through the PLAIN
authenticator. However, I cannot seem to be able to make it work or more
importantly I am confused about how to make it work. I didn't see anything
in the FAQ on this specifically.
