[Exim] maildir_use_size_file

The Exim specification says "Exim creates a maildirsize file in a maildir
if one does not exist..." yet, I get the following error message:

defer (2): No such file or directory: while opening or reading
/path/to/maildir/was/here/Maildir//maildirsize

Am I doing something wrong or missing something?
