Because (AIUI) the latter is the right format. The former isn't. The
would, I believe, mean "testuser at domain '1', which is a subdomain of
domain '2', which is a subdomain of domain '3', which is a subdomain of
domain '4'.". The latter means "testuser at the host with IP 1.2.3.4"
which is what you want. But no doubt some MTAs will accept the former and
attempt to decode what the user *actually* meant.

One arbitrary piece of software accepting a certain input (even if it's
sendmail) is rarely a reliable indicator of anything much...
