I'm reminded by a colleague elsewhere that VAX/VMS runs a beautifully
stable OS. He hasn't rebooted theirs for several years.

Only as long as the release is current (+/- half a year or so). If
you're to stay with the programme (as opposed to doing your own
support single-handed for a discontinued release) then you'd need a
re-install 2 or 3 times a year.
But this is the wrong place for OS advocacy, so I'll try to shut up
now.
