FreeBSD 4.10 and 5.x should both be able to use rcNG. If you don't have
/usr/local/etc/rc.subr on the 4.10 system then install this port:
/usr/ports/sysutils/rc_subr
Then in both cases now, the file rc.subr will be in local/etc.
From there (on your 4.10 box) you can
mv /etc/rc.d/exim /usr/local/etc/rc.d/exim.sh
Now ensure that you have
exim_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf in both boxes. This way
sh /usr/local/etc/rc.d/exim.sh {start|stop} will work on both boxes.
