I hate to reply to myself but I noticed something else.

When I'm getting the errors in the log, an "lsof
/var/spool/exim/wait-remote_smtp.lockfile" shows about 60 exim processes
accessing the file, and when I'm not getting the errors I've noticed
anywhere from 0 to 30 processes attached to that file.

Is there a linux (2.6) tunable to allow most simultanious access to the
file?
