There are transient routing failures fairly routinely which could easily
cause server X to fail to connect to your primary server but connect OK to
your secondary, even though your secondary connects fine to your primary.
During those incidents, you would be denying valid mail.

How long do you expect your DSL outages to last? If two or three days or
less, forget the secondary MX. The sending server is perfectly capable of
queuing the message it has for you. (Yahoo Groups aside, where any sort of
failure seems to trigger them to make the message available via the web
interface and forget about trying again.)

(Several of the school districts in our area shut their mail servers down
over weekends, letting us and the others sending to them store their mail
for them. Sigh.)
