Your SMTP (by hand) was exceedingly flakey, but one possible option
is that you wouldn't have been sending the SIZE command, which exim
would. If Lotus is doing something weird, unfortunately, not unusual
for Lotus, then it may be getting stuck deciding that the size is a
problem without actually trying to spool the message?

Submit a message with -odq and then exim -d+all -M <the_queued_id> ?
