Not strange at all. There's no *guarantee* that every error and
RFC-violation will get diagnosed by the other MTA. Perhaps they
noticed the increasing number of spammers and other ne'er-do-wells who
present underscores in their HELO string, and decided to apply the
syntax rules more tightly.
