I use saslauthd but it doesn't even know whether I run an IMAP or POP3
service, but it works. So I assume you are doing something more
complicated than what the saslauthd does by default.

Not exactly true but doable. Why even introduce another point of
failure? So when your IMAP server is down, ASMTP doesn't work, correct??
