This is a rather old way of doing things which has various problems.
Rather than continuing with an old version of Exim and a relatively poor
way of checking for spam, it would be *well* worth your time to upgrade to
Exim 4.x and use Exiscan instead (don't be put off - it's not difficult
and once you do it, you'll wish you did it earlier!). Check out my HOWTO

Aside from everything else, you will find that with Exim 4's powerful
ACLs, you can block a lot of spam before it even reaches SpamAssassin.
SpamAssassin alone in a default install is of limited usefulness these
days unless you have Bayes-trained it, because spammers are good at
evading the default SA rules (especially since it's a while since SA 2.63
came out and they have therefore had time to experiment).
