It just seems to me that it would be trivial to add a command to IMAP
that would just act as a pipe between the client and the SMTP port on
the server to allow IMAP to relay outgoing mail from the user to the
SMTP port.

It's already connected and authenticated. All IMAP would have to do is
connect to port 25 of localhost and pipe the data through.

It seems so obvious to me that I don't understand why someone doesn't
make it happen.
