Subject: [Exim] Opinions required please
Hi All,

I would appreciate a few opinions on this scenario,

An Exim (4.30) server running on RedHat 7.3 needs to provide the
following services;

Deliver all incoming mail first to another machine for Spam/Virus
scanning (a machine (not running Exim) that only accepts 20 simultaneous
connections from the same I.P, often resulting in refused connections
and therefore retries).

Then accept some of this mail back (i.e mail destined for corporate
domains routed via this server). There are conditions in place to make
sure that mail only gets sent out once for scanning.

Move mail for offline sites to an offline spool using bsmtp, as per the
cookbook example.

Handle ETRN requests and mail delivery for 554 domains. Requeue mail
from the offline spool as needed.

Handle around 5 to 6 GBs of mail a day.

The spec of this machine is as follows;

Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 1.70GHz
RAM: 1GB
SCSI Controller: Adaptec AIC-7899P U160/m (rev 01)
HDD: Vendor: IBM-PSG Model: ST318404LW

Should this machine be capable of handling this load? Personally I don't
believe that one drive is sufficient and even a cheap IDE RAID subsystem
would improve performance dramatically but the person in charge of
paying for the RAID kit doesn't think so.

BTW this machine has seen load averages of over 1000.

I think that the hardware is way under spec, particularly the disk
subsystem, but would love to hear your opinions, maybe my Linux/Exim
config is up to crap.

Thanks in advance

Clint
