I ran into a problem the other day that I've not seen. It basically
resulted in the same message being sent over and over to the receipent,
but the inside server kept thinking that the message failed each time, so
it kept trying.

This happens over and over...
However the outside server says it got the message and actually delivered
it to the real user on the Internet the first time, and each susequent
attempt:

Of course it does the same thing over and over...
This is not something that other messages have done. It is the first time
I have seen this between these two servers which have tons of email and
never any problems.
The message included a text attachment which was a dump of a
communications connection (lots of periods in it).. I'm wondering if that
might have had something to do with it.
While there is a firewall between the two servers, no smtpfixup is being
used.
I've seen similar actions on the outside server to the Internet for some
messages that have attachments, but have not heard if the receiving server
is actually getting them okay. This might be related.
