That philosophy may work with incoming e-mail but it shouldn't be
applied to DNS. There is a defined behaviour that mail exchangers are
expected to honour. If someone has defined an MX host then they should
be able to expect that the A record for a domain (should such exist)
will NOT be hammered by any host that can't resolve the MX records.
altavista.com doesn't listen on port 25, so your suggested breakage of
protocol would just waste everybody's time and resources. SMTP is
designed to be resilient and to cope with temporary problems, so just be
patient.
