Nope, the problem is with altavista. Just to sum up what you said
again:
$ host altavista.com
altavista.com has address 209.73.164.90
$ host -t mx altavista.com
altavista.com mail is handled by 0 .
So, altavista.com resolves to an IP. If they didn't have an MX mail
would be delivered there. But they do advertise an MX, albeit invalid,
but an MX non-the-less. So mail will be sent there...and fail.
