I've decided to go with the handy document Nigel has on the exim site:

In your experience, what's the OS you prefer for building a machine that
follows Nigel's Howto as a starting point?
I prefer to use OpenBSD3.4, but it appears the directory structure is
different than Nigel's guide covers. Both Exim and Mailman built cleanly,
but the Mailman.README.OpenBSD file looks daunting to say the least.
Is it on the mark to assume Nigels Howto was written using some form of
Linux? If so, i'm wondering what OS/version?
