Could be just about anything, but most notably, as this is RH8 machine, you
did not say anything about sendmail, is it still installed? is it still
in the startup init level (chkconfig --list)?
Had you ben doing anytesting with exim previous to this?
Had you tried to stop exim before restarting?
How do you start/stop exim?
There are other things I am sure, but this may get you started.
